Medan and the wider North Sumatra region have plenty of room for investment. With natural resources, tourism, agriculture, industry, and a large geographical area, the province has several sectors that could attract international investors.
This potential was highlighted during a visit from representatives of the German Embassy to the North Sumatra Provincial Government. During the meeting, the provincial government introduced several investment opportunities available in the region.
North Sumatra has a large and diverse landscape. The province stretches from coastal areas to mountains, while also having plantations, forests, industrial areas, and tourism destinations. This combination gives investors plenty of options to explore.
One of the areas highlighted by the provincial government is the Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone. The area has been developed for industries related to palm oil and its derivative products. With Indonesia being one of the world’s major producers of palm oil, developing industries around these resources could create opportunities for investment and further processing.
The provincial government also explained that it was working to make investment licensing easier. At the time of the meeting, an electronic system using barcodes was being prepared to help simplify administrative processes. The idea was to allow certain processes to continue even when relevant officials were not physically in their offices.
For German investors, infrastructure has been one of the concerns when considering investment outside Java. A representative from the German Embassy acknowledged that infrastructure had been one factor that made some investors hesitant to invest in regions such as North Sumatra.
However, after hearing about the investment potential in the province, the German representative said there was an opportunity for North Sumatra to receive more attention from European investors.
Tourism is another interesting sector. North Sumatra is home to Lake Toba, one of Indonesia’s best-known natural destinations. The province also has Nias, which offers beaches and other tourism potential.
At the same time, there are still challenges that need to be addressed. The provincial government mentioned waste management as one issue that needs more attention, especially around tourism areas and production activities.
Nias also needs better infrastructure to support its tourism and economic development. Better connectivity and facilities could make it easier for businesses and tourists to access the island.
The meeting with the German Embassy was therefore an opportunity to introduce North Sumatra’s potential and encourage more international interest. The provincial government hoped that investment that has traditionally focused on Java could also be directed toward North Sumatra.
For Medan and the rest of North Sumatra, stronger international investment could bring new business opportunities, technology, skills, and jobs. Germany is one of the countries that could potentially become a partner in developing these opportunities.
The visit shows that North Sumatra is looking beyond its natural resources. With better infrastructure, easier investment processes, and continued development, the province has the potential to become an increasingly interesting destination for international business.
