Germany and Indonesia are looking at new opportunities to work together in the high-tech sector. The cooperation is not only about German companies investing in Indonesia. It also includes opportunities for Indonesian businesses to expand into Germany.
The issue was highlighted by German Ambassador to Indonesia Ralf Beste during his visit to the Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) office in Jakarta on June 24, 2026. He said Germany wants to see more high-tech investment moving in both directions between the two countries.
More Opportunities for High-Tech Investment
According to Beste, high-tech cooperation is an important priority for Germany. The country is interested in creating better opportunities for German companies in Indonesia, while also encouraging Indonesian investors to explore the German market.
This means the relationship is expected to work both ways. Indonesian businesses can look for opportunities in Germany, while German companies can expand their investment and business activities in Indonesia.
The idea fits into the wider economic relationship between the two countries. In August 2026, Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs reported that more than 250 German companies were already doing business and operating in Indonesia, with cumulative investment from 2021 to 2026 reaching around US$1.23 billion.
Technology and Skills Go Together
Investment in technology is not just about factories, machines, or companies. Skilled workers are also needed to make high-tech industries work.
This is another area where Germany and Indonesia are exploring cooperation. Ambassador Beste highlighted opportunities for Indonesian engineering students and engineers to study and develop their skills in Germany.
Germany’s tuition-free public higher education system can also make the country attractive to international students. The idea is that better education and training can help create a skilled workforce that is ready to work in high-tech industries.
For Indonesian workers, this could create opportunities to gain international experience and develop technical skills that are useful in modern industries.
Focus on Strategic Industries
The high-tech discussion is also connected to several strategic industries. During President Prabowo Subianto’s meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Jakarta on June 15, 2026, Indonesia invited Germany to expand investment in areas such as energy transition, industrial downstreaming, electric vehicles, and semiconductor development. Cooperation in critical minerals and infrastructure was also discussed.
These sectors are important because technology is becoming a bigger part of Indonesia’s industrial development. Semiconductors, electric vehicles, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing all require investment, knowledge, and skilled workers.
A Partnership That Goes Both Ways
The growing cooperation between Indonesia and Germany shows that international investment can involve more than simply bringing foreign capital into one country. It can also involve technology transfer, education, workforce development, and business expansion.
For Indonesia, stronger cooperation with Germany could provide opportunities to develop high-tech industries and improve workforce skills. For Germany, closer cooperation can create access to Indonesia’s growing economy and industrial market.
The discussions in Jakarta therefore represent an effort to build a more connected Indonesia-Germany business relationship, with technology and human resources playing an important role in the next stage of cooperation.
