Surabaya is one of Indonesia’s busiest cities, and as the population grows, getting around the city can sometimes be a challenge. More people also means more private vehicles on the roads, which can lead to traffic congestion and higher carbon emissions. This is where Germany is stepping in to support the development of a greener public transportation system in Surabaya.
Through Germany’s KfW Development Bank, the country has shown its commitment to supporting sustainable transportation projects in Indonesia. One of the projects receiving support is the development of an environmentally friendly Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Surabaya. Germany has committed a subsidized loan of €250 million, along with an additional €5 million grant, for the development of the green BRT system.

Basically, BRT is designed to make public transportation faster, more organized, and more convenient. Instead of buses simply sharing the road with other vehicles, a BRT system can use dedicated lanes and specially designed stations. For Surabaya, the plan is not only about adding more buses. The bigger goal is to create an integrated public transportation system. Government plans have included east-west and north-south corridors, with the BRT system potentially using electric buses. The system is also expected to connect with existing railway services and other forms of public transportation.
Germany’s support is part of a wider cooperation between Indonesia and Germany in developing green transportation. KfW has been involved in supporting urban mass transportation projects in several Indonesian cities, including Surabaya and Semarang. The cooperation focuses on making public transportation more efficient while also helping Indonesia reduce carbon emissions.
For Surabaya residents, a better BRT system could bring some practical benefits. If public transportation becomes more comfortable, reliable, and easy to access, people may have more reasons to leave their cars and motorcycles at home. That could eventually help reduce traffic pressure on the city’s roads.
The project could also have a positive environmental impact. Electric buses, for example, can help reduce emissions from conventional diesel-powered vehicles. When combined with good routes, proper stations, and integration with trains and feeder services, public transportation can become a much more attractive option for daily travel.
There is also an economic side to the project. Better transportation can make it easier for people to travel to workplaces, schools, shopping areas, and other parts of the city. It can also improve connections between different areas of the wider Surabaya metropolitan region.
Of course, building a large BRT network is not something that happens overnight. It requires careful planning, infrastructure development, funding, and coordination between national and local governments. Making sure the system is easy to use will also be important if Surabaya wants residents to switch from private vehicles to public transport.
Still, Germany’s financial support gives Surabaya an important push toward greener urban mobility. If the project is developed properly, the new BRT system could become more than just another bus service. It could be an important part of a cleaner, more connected, and more comfortable transportation system for the city in the future.
