  Wednesday, 19 August 2026   Medan is one of Indonesia’s biggest cities, and like many growing cities, it faces challenges related to the environment and cleanliness. Managing waste, keeping public spaces clean, and creating a healthier urban environment require cooperation from many different sides.   Germany has shown interest in working with the Medan City Government on these issues. A meeting between Medan Deputy Mayor Aulia Rachman and German Ambassador to Indonesia Ina Ruth Luise Lepel discussed possible cooperation, especially in the areas of environmental management and cleanliness.   Tuesday, 18 August 2026   Indonesia and Germany are working together to develop a more modern and sustainable transportation system in the Greater Surabaya area. One of the key projects is the Surabaya Regional Railway Line, or SRRL, which is expected to make daily travel easier while supporting a greener future for East Java.   The cooperation became more concrete in June 2025 when the Indonesian Ministry of Finance and Germany’s development bank, KfW, signed a 230-million-euro loan agreement for the first phase of the SRRL project.   Tuesday, 18 August 2026   Spain has shown its interest in supporting Indonesia’s infrastructure development through low-interest loans and direct investment. The offer came as part of efforts to strengthen economic cooperation between Spain and Indonesia, two countries that have continued to look for new opportunities to work together.   In 2015, Spain announced that it was prepared to provide around 250 million euros in low-interest financing for joint projects in Indonesia. The funding could be used for different sectors, including infrastructure and renewable energy.
