Big cities often face the biggest environmental challenges. More people, more buildings, and more traffic usually mean higher energy use. That is why Surabaya is becoming an exciting place to watch. The city has been selected as one of the pilot cities for the Sustainable Energy Transition in Indonesia (SETI) project, a collaboration between the Indonesian and German governments.
Why Surabaya?
The choice was not random. Surabaya already has experience with green city programs, making it a practical place to test new ideas before they are expanded elsewhere. The project will run until 2028 and is designed to improve policies, financing, and real-world implementation of clean energy.
Another pilot city is Batam, but Surabaya will play a key role in showing how renewable energy and energy efficiency can work together in a busy urban environment.
What will change?
Instead of focusing on one giant power plant, the project looks at the whole energy ecosystem. Key activities include:
-Better policies for renewable energy and efficiency
-New financing options to attract investors
-Cleaner industrial practices in sectors such as steel, textiles, and paper
-Energy-efficient buildings powered by more renewable energy
This mix matters because cities consume huge amounts of electricity every day. Even small improvements in buildings can save significant energy over time.
More than an environmental project
The partnership is also about the economy. Germany brings technical expertise and experience in the energy transition, while Indonesia offers growing demand and huge renewable energy potential.
If the pilot succeeds, it could create new business opportunities for local companies, encourage innovation, and reduce long-term energy costs. Cleaner air and lower carbon emissions are welcome bonuses.
A step toward Indonesia’s climate goals
Indonesia has promised to cut greenhouse gas emissions, and the energy sector is one of the biggest challenges. The SETI project supports that national commitment by promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency together.
For residents, the changes may appear gradually through more efficient public buildings, smarter energy use, and greener urban planning. Those everyday improvements are exactly what the project hopes to prove.
