Indonesia has long been an attractive market for foreign investors, and Spanish companies are no exception.\u00a0 Group of 31 Spanish companies showed strong interest in expanding their business activities in Indonesia, particularly in infrastructure, construction, energy, and land transportation.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The companies took part in an Investment and Business Cooperation Forum in Jakarta. During the event, Spanish officials and business representatives discussed the opportunities available in Indonesia and how companies from both countries could work together.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
One of the biggest areas of interest was infrastructure. Spanish companies already had experience working on major infrastructure projects in different parts of the world. At the time, Spanish Trade Minister Jaime Garcia-Legas pointed to projects such as the high-speed railway connecting Mecca and Medina and railway development in the United States as examples of Spanish companies’ capabilities.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Indonesia was seen as a promising market because of its relatively stable economic conditions and its need for better infrastructure. The Spanish companies were reportedly optimistic about increasing their investment commitments in Indonesia to around 250 million euros within two years, compared with about 70 million euros in previous years.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Railway development was one opportunity that attracted particular attention. At that time, railway facilities were mainly available in Java and Sumatra, while construction had started in Sulawesi and Kalimantan. The Indonesian government also expected railway infrastructure to eventually reach other regions, including Papua.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
For Spanish businesses, this presented a chance to bring their experience and technology into a market that was still developing its transportation network. Better railways could also support Indonesia’s wider economic growth by making the movement of people and goods easier.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Energy was another important sector. Indonesia needs reliable power infrastructure to support industrial development, growing cities, and economic activity. Spanish companies with experience in power generation could potentially contribute through investment, technology, and cooperation with Indonesian businesses.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The interest was also part of a broader trade relationship between Indonesia and Spain. According to ANTARA, Spain imported goods worth around 1.706 billion euros from Indonesia in the previous year. These products included cooking oil, coal, rubber, footwear, and textiles. Meanwhile, Indonesian imports from Spain included aircraft spare parts, steel products, paper, chemicals, and machinery.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Another interesting point is that around 50 Spanish companies were already operating in Indonesia at the time, and their number had doubled over the previous five years. This suggested that Spanish business interest in the Indonesian market was not completely new.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Of course, investment plans do not automatically mean every company will eventually build a project or invest the full amount discussed. Businesses still need to consider regulations, costs, market conditions, local partnerships, and other practical factors.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Still, the interest from 31 Spanish companies showed that Indonesia had significant potential for Spanish investors, especially in infrastructure, construction, energy, and transportation.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Looking ahead, stronger cooperation between Indonesia and Spain could create opportunities for technology transfer, infrastructure development, job creation, and closer business relationships.
