Indonesia is moving toward a greener economy, and creating new jobs that support the environment is becoming an important part of that journey. This issue was highlighted at the Indonesia\u2019s Green Jobs Conference (IGJC) 2026 in Jakarta, where Indonesia and Germany strengthened their cooperation to promote green jobs and sustainable economic development.<\/p>\n

The conference was held at the Bappenas building in Jakarta on September 2, 2026. It was organized by the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) together with the German development cooperation agency GIZ through the Green Jobs for Social Inclusion and Sustainable Transformation, or GESIT, project.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Although the main focus was green employment, the discussion also connected closely with investment and environmental development. A greener economy needs more than good ideas. It requires technology, infrastructure, investment, and workers who have the right skills to support new industries.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Indonesia has set an ambitious target for renewable energy. The government wants the share of new and renewable energy in the country\u2019s primary energy mix to increase from 20 percent in 2025 to 70 percent by 2045. According to Bappenas, this transition could create millions of new employment opportunities.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
That is where cooperation with Germany becomes important. Germany has extensive experience in supporting sustainable development, green technology, and workforce training. Through the Indonesia-Germany GESIT partnership, both sides are working on areas such as policy development, technical capacity building, upskilling programs, and practical solutions for the green economy.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The idea of green jobs is actually broader than simply creating jobs in renewable energy. Green employment can also be connected to agriculture, forestry, fisheries, manufacturing, tourism, waste management, energy, and other industries. The key is that these jobs should contribute to environmental protection or operate through more sustainable processes.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Bappenas estimates that more than 5.3 million green jobs could be needed in Indonesia by 2029. At the same time, more than 72 million existing jobs have the potential to be transformed so they become more compatible with a low-carbon economy.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
This means Indonesia does not only need to create completely new professions. Many existing workers may also need new skills. A person already working in manufacturing, construction, agriculture, or transportation, for example, may need additional knowledge to work with cleaner technologies and more sustainable production methods.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The IGJC 2026 therefore focused on bringing different groups together, including government institutions, businesses, universities, development partners, communities, and young people. The goal is to make sure that the green transition does not happen only at the policy level but can also create real opportunities for workers and businesses.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Germany’s support is particularly relevant because investment in green technology will only work effectively when it is supported by skilled workers. As German representatives emphasized during the conference, technology and investment need people with the right skills to make the transition successful.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
For Jakarta and Indonesia more broadly, this cooperation could help build a stronger foundation for environmentally friendly investment. Green businesses need workers, while workers need training and new opportunities. When these elements come together, the green transition can become not only an environmental agenda but also an economic opportunity.<\/p>\n
